An app is not a feature; it’s a second product your brand now ships, with its own reviews, its own support tickets, and its own way of dying (server shutdowns, store removals, abandoned updates). Done well, app control adds genuine capability a remote can’t match.   1. Who publishes the app — your developer account, or the manufacturer’s? (This decides whose name is on the store listing, who controls updates, and what happens in a dispute.)
  2. Who maintains it — update cadence, OS-compatibility commitments, and for how long?
  3. What happens if the arrangement ends — do your customers keep a working app? Is there a handover path?

Should your first product be smart?

An honest decision sequence for brands:

  1. Does your buyer want routines and tracking, or just a good panel? (Recovery and habit-focused audiences value scheduling; many buyers just want the light.)
  2. Can you support connectivity tickets? If you’re a one-person brand, every pairing issue lands on you.
  3. Is the app’s ownership structure acceptable under the six questions above?
  4. Does the panel pass the manual-fallback rule? Non-negotiable.
  5. Price the premium honestly. “Smart” justifies a higher price only if the capability is real — buyers increasingly see through checkbox connectivity.
