This is a plain dictionary of what each certification actually guarantees, what it doesn’t, and how to verify that a badge on a listing corresponds to a real document naming the device you’re buying.

What the badge row is hiding
Read that table again and notice the pattern in the right-hand column: not one of these marks says anything about whether the panel delivers its claimed irradiance. A device can carry CE, FCC, and RoHS, be fully compliant, and still advertise an irradiance figure measured with a solar meter at zero distance on a cold panel.

Which are meaningful signals, and which are table stakes
- Table stakes: CE/UKCA, FCC, RoHS. Nearly everyone has them because markets require them. Their presence tells you little; their absence tells you a lot.
- More meaningful: ISO 13485 involves an audited quality management system — it says something real about how a factory operates, which is why buyers weigh it above a CE sticker.
- Genuinely informative: a photobiological safety report (e.g. IEC 62471) for the specific device — because eye safety is a real question for a bright LED panel, and this is a test, not a declaration.
- Not a certification at all: “medical grade,” “clinical strength,” “hospital quality” — no body issues these; they’re marketing, as covered in our claims verification guide.

How to verify a certification claim
A badge on a listing is a picture. A certificate is a document. Verify:
- Ask for the actual certificate or test report — not a badge image, not a claim in an email.
- Check it names your device. A certificate for a different model in the range doesn’t cover the one you’re buying. This is the single most common gap.
- Check the issuing body and that it’s a real, identifiable one.
- Check the dates — issue and validity.
- Check the scope — which directives, standards, or product categories the file actually covers.
- Ask separately for performance data — irradiance with stated conditions — because no certificate covers it.

What a manufacturer can do about it: provide the actual certificates and test reports for the specific device rather than a badge row, state plainly which standards each file covers and which it doesn’t, and supply performance documentation (irradiance with stated conditions, per-wavelength output) alongside the compliance files — because those are different questions and honest suppliers answer both. A factory that engineers toward target standards can hand over the underlying documentation; whether a given device carries a given certification is a fact for buyers to verify per device, per market, not a claim to accept from a listing.
