Red light therapy vocabulary comes in two kinds: terms with definitions, and terms with vibes. Irradiance, fluence, and LED binning mean specific, measurable things. “Medical grade” and “clinical strength” mean whatever the listing wants them to. This glossary covers both — every technical term a buyer will meet on a spec sheet, and every marketing phrase that deserves a flag — each with a one-paragraph definition and a link to the deeper guide. Terms tagged SPEC are measurable; terms tagged MARKETING have no fixed definition.

Light & dose fundamentals

Irradiance SPEC
Light power arriving per unit area, in mW/cm². The panel spec that matters most — and only meaningful with conditions: distance, instrument, thermal state, peak vs average. Full treatment in our irradiance explainer; how it gets inflated in our irradiance claims guide.
Fluence / Dose SPEC
Total light energy delivered per unit area, in J/cm². Dose = irradiance × time ÷ 1000. It’s what a session actually delivers — the math behind session length in our dosing guide.
Wavelength (nm) SPEC
The colour of the light, in nanometers. Red (~630–660nm) and near-infrared (~810–850nm) carry most of the research. Note: wavelength is measured in nm — Hz applies only to pulse frequency, never to wavelength itself. Comparison in our 660nm vs 850nm guide.
Near-infrared (NIR) SPEC
Light beyond visible red (~810–850nm on panels), invisible to the eye but visible as a glow through a phone camera — the sample-check trick in our sample evaluation guide.
Biphasic response SPEC
The research observation that a moderate dose tends to be more useful than a very high one — the reason “more is better” is the wrong instinct in dosing.
Beam angle / Uniformity SPEC
How evenly the light spreads across the treatment area. Poor uniformity produces hotspots and weak zones — the “polka dot” problem in our coverage guide. A 9-point irradiance map shows it; a single centre reading hides it.

Engineering & build

LED binning SPEC
LED chips vary slightly in wavelength and brightness off the production line, so they’re sorted into “bins” of matched performance. The bin determines wavelength accuracy and consistency — “which bin, and why?” is a question only the actual maker answers fluently, per our factory audit checklist.
Constant-current driver SPEC
A driver that holds steady current to the LEDs, producing stable, low-flicker output. The quality alternative to cheap PWM dimming — the difference explained in our EMF, flicker and heat guide.
PWM (pulse-width modulation) SPEC
Dimming by rapidly switching LEDs on/off. Cheap to implement; produces flicker that may be invisible but is measurable — check by viewing the lit panel through a phone camera in video mode.
Flicker SPEC
Rapid fluctuation in light output, expressed as a percentage and frequency. Rarely on the spec sheet; always measurable.
EMF SPEC
Electromagnetic fields any mains-powered device produces. Elevated readings close to ungrounded panels are the concern reviewers flag; grounding and shielding reduce it, and it falls quickly with distance.
Lumen depreciation SPEC
The gradual decline of LED output with operating hours. The panel still lights up while delivering less — why “still works” and “still performs” differ, in our lifespan guide.
LM-80 SPEC
A standardised test method measuring LED output decline over thousands of hours. LM-80 data from the LED supplier is how lifespan claims become verifiable — and something resellers usually can’t produce.
Thermal throttling SPEC
Output dropping as a panel heats during a session, from inadequate thermal design or overdriven LEDs. Shows up in a full-session test, never in a ten-second demo.
Optical output power SPEC
The actual light energy a panel emits — as distinct from rated LED power (the marketing headline) and electrical input (wall draw). The three-number distinction in our wattage guide.

Sourcing & compliance

OEM / ODM SPEC
OEM: a factory builds to your specification. ODM: you adapt the factory’s engineered platform under your brand. The process from brief to reorder is in our private label supplier guide.
White-label SPEC
A finished generic device sold under many brand names with little or no engineering change. Legitimate, but unverifiable when the reselling brand holds no engineering data — the distinction in our factory vs white-label guide.
MOQ SPEC
Minimum order quantity — which scales with customization depth. One flat MOQ regardless of customization usually signals stock resale; the economics in our cost and MOQ guide.
First Article Inspection (FAI) SPEC
Comparing early production units against the approved golden sample before full production runs — the protection against sample-vs-production drift in our sample evaluation guide.
FDA cleared vs registered SPEC
Cleared: a specific device passed premarket review for a specific indication. Registered: a company listed itself in a database, with no review. Presenting the second as the first is the classic claims trap — our claims verification guide.
CE / UKCA / FCC / RoHS SPEC

“Medical grade” MARKETING
No regulatory body defines or certifies it for this category. Meaningful only if a specific document stands behind it; otherwise it’s typography. The one question that tests it: “which document supports this phrase?” — our spec validation guide.
“Clinical strength” / “Hospital quality” MARKETING
Same status as “medical grade”: no definition, no test, no certificate. Restatements of a claim, not support for it.
“Clinically proven” MARKETING
As a supplier phrase, usually unverifiable — it rarely refers to trials of that specific device. General photobiomodulation literature doesn’t make a particular product “proven.”
“Full body” MARKETING
Almost any panel covers your whole body if you stand far enough back — at a dose too low to matter. Honest full-body means a physically large panel at a useful distance; the physics in our coverage guide.
“500W” (headline wattage) MARKETING
Almost always rated LED power, not delivered light — panels advertised at 500W may emit a fraction of that as optical output. Ask which of the three power numbers it is.
“6 wavelengths” (wavelength count) MARKETING
Presence isn’t power: bonus wavelengths are often a token handful of LEDs added for the box. Ask for output per wavelength, separately — our multi-wavelength guide.

The pattern behind the whole glossary

Read the tags again and one rule emerges: SPEC terms come with conditions and documents; MARKETING terms come with adjectives. Every verifiable term above has a number, a test method, or a certificate behind it. Every flagged phrase is an adjective wearing a lab coat. That single distinction — does this term have a measurement condition or just a mood? — is most of what a buyer needs to read any listing in this category, and it’s the thread running through our entire spec trust gap series.
