The sample is the cheapest quality control you will ever do: every problem you catch in one unit is a problem you don’t receive in a thousand. Yet most buyers evaluate a sample by turning it on, seeing red light, and approving. This guide is the fuller version — the physical inspection, the functional tests, the output checks you can run without a lab, the document match, and the trap that catches even careful buyers: the gap between the sample you approved and the production that follows it.

Physical inspection — before you plug it in
- Weight against spec. Weigh it. A panel meaningfully lighter than the spec sheet suggests thinner housing, smaller heat sinks, or a lighter power supply than promised.
- Build and finish. Panel gaps, sharp edges, loose fasteners, rattles when tilted. Cosmetic sloppiness on a hand-built sample predicts worse at volume.
- Connectors and cable. Seat the power connector — snug or wobbly? Cable length and thickness against spec; flimsy cables and loose connectors are among the most common field failures.
- Mounting hardware. If it ships with hooks, stand, or brackets: do they fit, and do they feel rated for the panel’s actual weight?
- Labels and markings. Model number, ratings, and certification markings present and matching the documents you were sent — a mismatch here matters in section 04.
Functional checks — a full session, not a ten-second glance
The single biggest evaluation mistake: powering on for ten seconds. Heat problems, output drift, and noise only reveal themselves over a full session. Run the panel for its longest intended session length and check:
- Every LED lights. Count the visible red against the spec. Then — the check almost everyone misses — point a phone camera at the panel: NIR LEDs (810–850nm) are invisible to the eye but most phone sensors show them as a glow. A “working” panel can have a dead NIR bank you’d never see.
- Controls and modes. Every mode, the timer, the remote from realistic distance and angle. Controllers are a common failure point — exercise them all.
- Heat over the session. Housing temperature at the end of a full run; does output visibly dim as it heats? Thermal throttling shows up here, not at minute one.
- Fan behaviour. Noise level, whether it modulates or runs flat-out, any rattle or whine you couldn’t live with daily.
- Flicker. View the lit panel through your phone camera in video mode — banding or strobing on screen suggests PWM flicker, the driver-quality issue from our EMF, flicker and heat guide.
Output checks without a lab
Honesty first: you cannot verify absolute irradiance without proper instruments. A cheap solar meter will give you a number, but it’s the same instrument class behind inflated marketing figures — fine for relative comparisons (is the centre stronger than the edge? did output drop after 20 minutes?), useless for verifying “our panel delivers X mW/cm²”. What you can do:

The document match
A sample isn’t evaluated in isolation — it’s evaluated against the paperwork. Line up the spec sheet, quote, and certificates you were sent, and confirm:
- Model number on the panel = model number on the documents. Certificates for a different model don’t cover your device — the most common certification gap, covered in our certifications guide.
- Claimed specs = observable reality where you can check: LED count, dimensions, weight, wavelengths present, power draw if you can measure it.
- Discrepancies raised in writing. How the supplier responds is itself the test: a real manufacturer explains or corrects with specifics; a reseller deflects — the tell from our factory vs white-label guide.
The sample-vs-production trap
Here’s the uncomfortable truth from the factory side: samples are often the best unit you will ever receive. Hand-built, checked twice, sometimes cherry-picked. The risk isn’t the sample — it’s what drifts between sample approval and volume production: substituted components, a different LED bin, looser assembly under time pressure. Three protections:

- Keep the golden sample. The approved unit stays with you (or sealed at the factory) as the physical reference every production batch answers to.
